The Story Behind the Name

Red Queen running with Alice

“Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”
–Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass

The Theory

Our name originates from the Red Queen Hypothesis, proposed in 1973 by American evolutionary biologist Leigh Van Valen. This hypothesis, also known as the Red Queen’s Race, explains the reason for the simultaneous evolution of both predator and prey.

Put simply, the Red Queen Hypothesis states that if the prey evolves to develop certain advantageous traits, the predator too must evolve to combat these traits, and vice versa–thus creating an unending evolutionary arms race.

Red Queen Hypothesis and Video Games

We can apply this analogously to video gaming. As games become more challenging, players must also improve their abilities and skillsets to keep up. The more difficult the games become, the more creative and intelligent players must become to beat the games.

As a company, we aim to provide gamers with that extra intelligence by using analytics to empower those players to become toolmakers. We provide players (the “prey”) with the resources necessary to create next-generation tools and evolve to win in today’s ever-advancing games.
